Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(A)

John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah
19 Now this was John’s(A) testimony when the Jewish leaders[a](B) in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”(C)
21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”(D)
He said, “I am not.”
“Are you the Prophet?”(E)
He answered, “No.”
22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness,(F) ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”[b](G)
24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26 “I baptize with[c] water,”(H) John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me,(I) the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”(J)
28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan,(K) where John was baptizing.
John Testifies About Jesus
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,(L) who takes away the sin of the world!(M) 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’(N) 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”
32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.(O) 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water(P) told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’(Q) 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”[d](R)
John’s Disciples Follow Jesus(S)
35 The next day John(T) was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”(U)
37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”
They said, “Rabbi”(V) (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”
So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).(W) 42 And he brought him to Jesus.
Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called(X) Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter[e]).(Y)
Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael
43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip,(Z) he said to him, “Follow me.”(AA)
44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.(AB) 45 Philip found Nathanael(AC) and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law,(AD) and about whom the prophets also wrote(AE)—Jesus of Nazareth,(AF) the son of Joseph.”(AG)
46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?”(AH) Nathanael asked.
“Come and see,” said Philip.
47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite(AI) in whom there is no deceit.”(AJ)
48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.
Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi,(AK) you are the Son of God;(AL) you are the king of Israel.”(AM)
50 Jesus said, “You believe[f] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you,[g] you[h] will see ‘heaven open,(AN) and the angels of God ascending and descending(AO) on’[i] the Son of Man.”(AP)
Jesus Changes Water Into Wine
2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.(AQ) Jesus’ mother(AR) was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman,[j](AS) why do you involve me?”(AT) Jesus replied. “My hour(AU) has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”(AV)
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing,(AW) each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[k]
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.(AX) He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs(AY) through which he revealed his glory;(AZ) and his disciples believed in him.(BA)
12 After this he went down to Capernaum(BB) with his mother(BC) and brothers(BD) and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.
Jesus Clears the Temple Courts(BE)
13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(BF) Jesus went up to Jerusalem.(BG) 14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves,(BH) and others sitting at tables exchanging money.(BI) 15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house(BJ) into a market!” 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”[l](BK)
18 The Jews(BL) then responded to him, “What sign(BM) can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”(BN)
19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”(BO)
20 They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body.(BP) 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said.(BQ) Then they believed the scripture(BR) and the words that Jesus had spoken.
23 Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(BS) many people saw the signs(BT) he was performing and believed(BU) in his name.[m] 24 But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. 25 He did not need any testimony about mankind,(BV) for he knew what was in each person.(BW)

35 Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. 36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, (R)“Behold the Lamb of God!”
37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they (S)followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?”
They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?”
39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).
40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was (T)Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the [d]Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.
Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of [e]Jonah. (U)You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, [f]A Stone).
Philip and Nathanael
43 The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found (V)Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.” 44 Now (W)Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found (X)Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom (Y)Moses in the law, and also the (Z)prophets, wrote—Jesus (AA)of Nazareth, the (AB)son of Joseph.”
46 And Nathanael said to him, (AC)“Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”
Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, (AD)an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”
48 Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?”
Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
49 Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, (AE)You are the Son of God! You are (AF)the King of Israel!”
50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (AG)hereafter[g] you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
Water Turned to Wine
2 On the third day there was a (AH)wedding in (AI)Cana of Galilee, and the (AJ)mother of Jesus was there. 2 Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”
4 Jesus said to her, (AK)“Woman, (AL)what does your concern have to do with Me? (AM)My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
6 Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, (AN)according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. 9 When the master of the feast had tasted (AO)the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. 10 And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”
11 This (AP)beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, (AQ)and [h]manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.
12 After this He went down to (AR)Capernaum, He, His mother, (AS)His brothers, and His disciples; and they did not stay there many days.
Jesus Cleanses the Temple(AT)
13 (AU)Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 (AV)And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers [i]doing business. 15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. 16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make (AW)My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” 17 Then His disciples remembered that it was written, (AX)“Zeal for Your house [j]has eaten Me up.”
18 So the Jews answered and said to Him, (AY)“What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?”
19 Jesus answered and said to them, (AZ)“Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
20 Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”
21 But He was speaking (BA)of the temple of His body. 22 Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, (BB)His disciples remembered that He had said this [k]to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said.
The Discerner of Hearts
23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the (BC)signs which He did. 24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He (BD)knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for (BE)He knew what was in man.
